Computer Classes

Instruction in the use of computers is offered for seniors 50 and older. This program enables seniors who have no experience with computers to explore their mysteries and learn basic operating skills, and to learn some of the most popular programs. Introductory and advanced classes are offered in Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and Excel, as well as in QuickBooks, used
for accounting. Other classes explain how to use the Internet, create and use email accounts and use other features of computers. Class size is limited to six participants to allow for hands-on learning and individual instruction. Introductory classes are free, while advanced classes are offered for a small fee. Check our Calendar for days and times, or call 301-624-5714 for details and to reserve a place.

Presentations
Each month a variety of presentations are made on topics of interest and importance to seniors, including financial planning, reverse mortgages, healthy living, writing, gardening, and birding. The main focus of these programs is to provide education and enrichment. (See Calendar for monthly Schedule of Events)

Library
Our comfortable, well-lit library has a range of books and periodicals on everything from health topics and retirement planning to architecture, travel and American history. All titles have been chosen because they are of special interest to seniors, whether for practical information for daily living or for general interest and enjoyment. We also keep copies of legislation in Congress that impacts seniors. Several Civic Council programs are active in promoting seniors' concerns regarding some of these laws. Finally, we provide contact information for local public and private services offered to seniors, from pro-bono professional services to retirement homes and healthcare programs.

Zambia Hope
A unique program of the Seniors Resource Center is partnering with Zambia Hope International, an organization that is assisting some of Zambia's 1.25 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS (see ZambiaHope.org for details about the organization and its programs). Seniors are invited to partner with children, corresponding with them, and generally encouraging them to seek education and succeed in life. Both seniors and orphans benefit from this bond of friendship. The Zambia Hope staff prepares profiles of the children under its care. The children's profiles are kept at the SRC and are presented online as well. (See ZambiaHope.org for more information as to how you can make a difference in the lives of these children)
